Johnny Got His Gun

You have now completed your first literature circle and read 1/3 of the book. What challenges have you read about so far? What challenges or conflicts do you predict will happen? How do you think the character/s will react to the challenge?

Answer these questions and pose a question you have. You may respond to your classmates' posts as well.

When you post, be sure to use your first name, the first letter of your last name, and your class period (ie. John D. 3).

  1. So far in Johnny Got His Gun, Joe has faced the realization that his legs, arms, nose, mouth, eyes and ears are missing. He is having flashbacks, but can't seem to completely distinguish between past and present. He struggling inside himself, as his thoughts are mixed up and he is extremely confused. I predict that Joe will try to communicate with the nurses and doctors, and I believe that he will ask them to kill him. This is because Joe believes that this kind of life is not worth living. A question I have is 'Has Joe been found by his mother and sisters, or is he an unidentified soldier'?

  2. So far in Johnny Got his Gun, Joe has encountered many challanges. He has discovered upon returning from fighting in WW1 and waking up in a hospital bed that he is blind, deaf, a quadrupal amputee, and percieved to be brain dead. His many challenges include dealing with these discoveries/ losses and trying to understand what is going on and communicate to his care givers that he has a coherently functioning brain. I think that future challenges for Joe will include trying to communicate with his doctors and regain a little bit of control over his own body. I don't know whether he will succeed in regaining some control, but I suspect that he will have some way to communicate through tough. I hope he can also get over or at least adress his suicidal instincts.

  3. The main character in Johnny Got His Gun, Joe, is nearing the end of a very short life. He has just recently woken up from suffering a very severe injury that cost him his arms, legs, ears, eyes, and mouth. He is assumed to be brain dead or a "blob of meat" by everyone else, but in fact he is quite alive and his mind is spinning. The book so far has been about Joe remembering his past life, with interspersed scenes of him in the present. His thoughts have begun to turn suicidal, as he sees no hope of ever leading a normal life again. I sincerely hope that he doesn't follow these terrible thoughts
